Name of Project: New Press Hall for Springfield News-Leader’s New Offset Press
651 North Boonville, Springfield, MO
Project Owner: Gannett Co, Inc.
Contractor: DeWitt and Associates
Cost: New Offset Press Hall: $6 Million
Size: 32,000 square feet / 775,000 cubic feet / 60 feet high Press Hall

Special challenges involved designing and constructing the new press hall’s mechanical room on top of the News-Leader’s existing distribution dock. This work was completed without interrupting the daily flow of newspapers. The new press hall’s mechanical support facilities (heating, cooling, plumbing, and compressed air systems) are fully redundant. This involved engineering the mechanical support facilities with the capability and capacities of keeping the new offset press operating at full capacity even if 50% of the mechanical support facilities fail.

Other challenges included coordinating with the offset press manufacturer, MAN-Roland of Augsburg, Germany. The new offset press requires a fully controlled climate at all times to operate at peak efficiency. High quantities of conditioned air are introduced thru special registers at various levels to minimize disturbing the newspaper webs that are running thru the press. Special automatic ink filters were installed to prevent the ink mist generated by the press operation from returning and damaging the press.

The News-Leader’s newspapers are printed from special imaging plates. These imaging plates are produced in the Computer-to-Plate (CTP) Room. The CTP room required very tight control of the space temperature and humidity. These space conditions are accomplished with special digital monitoring controls on the Heating/Cooling systems and redundant humidifiers to assure consistency between runs of the News-Leader newspaper.
